Tamil Literary Garden

Founded in 2001, the Tamil Literary Garden is a Toronto based charitable organization committed to promoting the development of literature in Tamil internationally. Its mandate includes creative writing, translations, book releases, awards, conferences and workshops. It recognizes that despite the richness and significance of contemporary writing, very little has been done to promote or to celebrate the authors who have made major contributions to Tamil studies. Hence the Tamil Literary Garden seeks to make a modest contribution by engaging in a number of activities that would serve the cause of literature. To this end it identifies projects that need to be supported and offers assistance by sponsoring publications, book launches, and translation workshops.

Among its activities, the event that takes centre stage is a Lifetime Achievement Award, given annually to a writer, scholar, critic or editor, who, over a period of time, has made very significant contribution to the growth or study of Tamil literature. Its recipients include authors Sundara Ramaswamy, K.Ganesh, the critic Venkat Swaminathan, the editor/ publisher Padmanaba Iyer, George L. Hart, Professor of Tamil at Berkeley University, USA, the playwright A.C.Tarcisius, well known translator Lakshmi Holmstrom, writer Ambai, writer Kovai Gnani, renowned researcher Iravatham Mahadevan, writer S.Ponnuthurai and writer S.Ramakrishnan.The Lifetime Achievement Award ( also known as Iyal Virudhu ) consists of a plaque and a cash prize of C$1500. The award is adjudicated by an international advisory board.

The Tamil Literary Garden also has other awards given at the same annual function: Awards for Fiction, Non-fiction, Poetry and Information Technology in Tamil. Starting in 2008, a scholarship to an undergraduate enrolled in a Tamil studies program. The topic for each year will be announced on the wesbsite.

The Tamil Literary Garden also organizes one or more lectures each year in conjunction with the Department of English, University of Toronto.

தமிழ் இலக்கியத் தோட்டம்

கனடிய தமிழ் இலக்கியத் தோட்டம், கல்வியாளர்கள், எழுத்தாளர்கள், வாசகர்கள், விமர்சகர்கள், கொடையாளர்கள் ஆகியவர்களின் ஆதரவுடன் 2001ம் ஆண்டு ரொறொன்ரோவில் ஆரம்பிக்கப்பட்ட அறக்கட்டளையாகும். இந்த இயக்கத்தின் பொதுவான நோக்கம் உலகமெங்கும் பரந்திருக்கும் தமிழை வளர்ப்பதாகும். தமிழ், ஆங்கில நூல்களின் மொழிபெயர்ப்பை ஊக்குவிப்பது, அரிய தமிழ் நூல்களை மீள் பதிப்பு செய்வது, தமிழ் பட்டறைகள் ஒழுங்கு செய்வது, கனடிய நூலகங்களுக்கு இலவசமாக தமிழ் நூல்கள் அளிப்பது போன்ற சேவைகள் இதனுள் அடங்கும். இந்த இயக்கத்தின் முக்கியமான பணி வருடா வருடம் உலகத்தின் மேன்மையான தமிழ் இலக்கிய சேவையாளர் ஒருத்தருக்கு வாழ்நாள் தமிழ் இலக்கிய சாதனை விருது வழங்கி கௌரவிப்பதாகும். இயல் விருது என்றழைக்கப்படும் இந்த சாதனை விருது பாராட்டுக் கேடயமும்1500 டொலர்கள் பணப்பரிசும் கொண்டது.

உலகளாவிய ஆலோசனக் குழு ஒன்றின் பரிந்துரையில் வருடா வருடம் இயல் விருது வழங்கப்படும். இந்த வாழ்நாள் விருது ஒரு படைப்பாளிக்கோ, கல்வியாளருக்கோ, நூல் வெளியீட்டாளருக்கோ, விமர்சகருக்கோ அல்லது வேறு வகையில் அளப்பரிய தமிழ் தொண்டாற்றிய ஒருவருக்கோ அளிக்கப்படும்.  வாழ்நாள் இலக்கிய சாதனைக்கான விருது இதுவரை எழுத்தாளர் சுந்தர ராமசாமி, எழுத்தாளர் கே. கணேஸ், விமர்சகர் வெங்கட் சாமிநாதன், பதிப்பாளர் பத்மநாப ஐயர்,  கல்வியாளர் ஜோர்ஜ் ஹார்ட், நாடகவியலாளர் ஏ.சீ.தாசீசியஸ், மொழிபெயர்ப்பாளர்  லக்ஷ்மி ஹோம்ஸ்ரோர்ம், எழுத்தாளர் அம்பை, எழுத்தாளர் கோவை ஞானி, ஆராய்ச்சியாளர் ஐராவதம் மகாதேவன், எழுத்தாளர் எஸ்.பொன்னுத்துரை, எழுத்தாளர் எஸ்.ராமகிருஷ்ணன் ஆகியவர்களுக்கு வழங்கப்பட்டிருக்கிறது.

பல்கலைக் கழகத்தில் தமிழ் கற்கும் சிறந்த மாணவருக்கு ஆயிரம் டொலர் புலமைப் பரிசிலும் உண்டு.  வருடாவருடம் ரொறொன்ரோ பல்கலைக் கழகத்துடன் இணைந்து தமிழ் இலக்கியத் தோட்டம் தமிழ் அறிஞர்களின் விரிவுரைகளுக்கும் ஏற்பாடு செய்கிறது.
